Since 1940, we’ve been about creating unforgettable moments and ridiculously good flavors. When you crack open a Fanta, you're cracking open an adventure.
Origin (1940s Germany): Fanta was originally created in Nazi Germany during World War II. Due to a trade embargo, the German Coca-Cola bottling plant (Coca-Cola GmbH), led by Max Keith, could not import the necessary Coca-Cola syrup.
The First Formula: To keep the plant operating, Keith developed a new drink using only available local ingredients, which primarily included whey (a cheese byproduct) and apple pomace (leftover apple fiber).
The Name: The name "Fanta" was the result of a staff brainstorming session, derived from the German word "Fantasie" (meaning "imagination").
Modern Relaunch (1955): The original German formula was retired after the war. The modern, orange-flavored Fanta was developed and first launched in Naples, Italy, in 1955, using locally sourced oranges. The Coca-Cola Company bought the brand and began distributing it globally in 1960.
